Neuromodulators (Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and More)

What You Should Know

Why We’re Providing You This Information

At Radiant You, we believe you should understand the treatments you receive. This overview explains how neuromodulators work, where they came from, and what you can expect from treatment.

What Are Neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators are injectable treatments that temporarily relax specific facial muscles to reduce wrinkles caused by repeated movement.
They are most commonly used to treat:
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet

A Brief History

Botulinum toxin has been used in medicine for decades.
It was first studied for neurological conditions such as muscle spasms, and later approved for cosmetic use in 2002 (Botox® Cosmetic).
Since then, it has become one of the most widely performed aesthetic treatments worldwide, with millions of treatments performed each year.

How It Works

All neuromodulators contain a purified form of botulinum toxin type A.
They work by:
  • Blocking nerve signals to targeted muscles
  • Temporarily reducing muscle movement
  • Allowing the overlying skin to smooth out

This is why they are most effective for dynamic wrinkles — the lines that form with facial expressions.

Available Products
There are several FDA-approved options, including:
  • Botox®
  • Dysport®
  • Xeomin®
  • Jeuveau®
  • Daxxify®
All of these work through the same mechanism and produce similar overall results when used appropriately.
Key Differences
While they function the same way, there are a few practical differences:
  • Onset: Some may work slightly faster (2–3 days), others take up to a week
  • Duration: Most last ~3–4 months; some may last longer
  • Dosing: Units differ between products but are adjusted accordingly
  • Formulation: Minor differences in how each is manufactured or purified
For most patients, these differences are subtle — and product selection is individualized.

What to Expect

  • Treatment takes ~10–15 minutes
  • Minimal discomfort
  • No downtime
After treatment:
  • Results begin in 2–7 days
  • Full effect in 2–4 weeks

Maintenance

  • Results are temporary
  • Most patients return every 3–4 months
  • Consistent treatment may help results last longer over time
Safety
Neuromodulators have an excellent safety record when performed by trained providers.
Common (temporary):
  • Mild swelling or bruising
  • Headache
Less common:
  • Temporary eyelid or brow drooping
